Beyond Tlos, a narrow but paved road leads to the mouth of the Saklıkent gorge (dawn to dusk). Some 300 metres (1,000ft) high and 18km (11 miles) long, this is the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey. Its first 2km (1 mile) is accessible only by a catwalk, then path that follows the base of the towering rock face through icy water pouring out of the limestone mountains of the Gombe Akdaği.

Pınara (across the valley and 20km/12 miles south of Tlos; daily 8am–5pm, until 7pm in summer) is less accessible than its neighbour, with final dirt-road approach from the village of Minare. You may well find yourself alone among the ruins scattered among olive trees at the base of a massive cliff honeycombed with tombs. Intricately carved tombs are also among the best-preserved structures in the town below; the so-called Royal Tomb is decorated with depictions of cityscapes and scenes of what appears to be a religious festival. Across the cultivated plain, the theatre is exquisite – small and perfectly formed, and never modified by the Romans.
